Modern-Meets-Traditional Living Room Refresh

I have been waiting way too long to share our living room refresh with you guys! It's actually been done for several weeks, but one of my big frames fell off the wall and broke so it's taken me a while to get a new one and get everything photographed. So here we go...

I still love the original look but was ready for something new. Since we are moving in less than a year, I didn't want to spend a lot of money but was itching for a fresh look. The biggest change came from simply rearranging the furniture. Today the room looks like this...

You might remember our living room used to look like this (see more of the previous look here)...

It feels so much more open in here now! Rearranging the furniture was just the fresh look I was craving, plus I added in some new accessories to make things a little more modern. I talked here about the shift in my style from vintage to more modern, and this room is following that trend. It's probably not all the way there since I was using a lot of what I already had, but I'm slowly moving forward in preparation for a different look in the new house.

I adore the new coffee table look! I used lots of white to lighten the feeling of the wood table, and it was such a simple change that made a big impact.

I adore this handmade bowl by Susan Gordon pottery. It is so unique and stunning, with its organic shape and gold rim. I had a hard time choosing between the gray and blush color! Everything she makes is beautiful. You can follow her on Instagram here and see her shop here

Chair: TJ Maxx | similar | Pillow: Serena and Lilly via Tuesday Morning | Gold frame: Target | Abstract print: She Reads Truth | Circles abstract print: Etsy | Abstract pillow: Society6

This side chair is one of my all-time favorite TJ Maxx scores. And can you believe I scored that Serena and Lily pillow at Tuesday Morning for $15?! The artwork in the gold frame is from She Reads Truth, and the top artwork is a printable from Etsy.

Large frame: Ikea Ribba | Artwork: Revel and Co | Fiddle leaf fig: Amazon | White basket: Target

And on the other side of the TV is more inexpensive abstract art. This is actually a $4 sheet of wrapping paper from Revel and Co. framed in an Ikea frame...can't beat that! The gallery wall stayed the same, except the top left art is a new printable from Etsy.

Gray pedestal table: World Market (discontinued) | similar | Vase: Magnolia Market | Lamp: Target

The side table is one of my favorite "moments" in the room. I picked up this beautiful green glass bottle on our trip to Magnolia this summer, and paired it with some accessories I already had plus an inexpensive brass lamp from Target. Simple and elegant.

The built-ins got a refresh too. I should probably do a whole separate post on the built-ins because shelf styling can be so tricky. Let's just say I spent lots of time pouring over Studio McGee's shelf styling and tried to follow their lead. Hopefully it's not too obvious, but the bottom two shelves are also baby-proof!

Wooden Dough Bowl: Vintage | similar | Geometric object: TJ Maxx | Moravian star: local boutique Geometric vase: Target

I moved the console that used to be behind the couch over to this side of the room. I would really like to paint it white to give it a cleaner, less vintage feel, but I haven't gotten to it just yet.

The brass mirror paired with gold accessories is one of my favorite things!

Console Table: Joss and Main | available here | Round brass mirror: Target | Lamp: JC Penny Concrete and gold vases: Large | Small | Artwork: Etsy | Gold candle holder/vase: TJ Maxx | White garden stool: Home Goods | similar

You can see that I added just a few pops of pink through artwork and accessories. I moved the convex mirror from our entry and I have to say I love it above the TV (oh decorating around a TV...does anyone enjoy that?!)

The pillows on the sofa really aren't new but I'm not sure I've shared them on the blog before, just on Instagram. I really love the mix of patterns and textures between the cut velvet and ikat prints. So fun!

Fiddle leaf fig: Amazon | Gold side table: secondhand | similar | Mirrored frame: Target | White basket: Target | Coffee Table: Home Decorators Collection | similar | Couch: Ikea Ektorp | Rug: Overstock | similar | Leaf artwork: Etsy

I really wanted a real fiddle leaf fig tree for this space, but I am notorious about killing plants, so I figured it probably wasn't worth it. This little guy looks very real and was only $40 from Amazon. I think I'd like to upgrade to a bigger version soon, but he adds a good pop of green for now. I scored the gold mirrored side table on a Facebook buy-sell-trade group.

I found the white vases above for $11 at Home Goods, and then that night was browsing a favorite designers' website (who shall remain nameless because I still love them!) and found them for $110! Thank goodness for Home Goods!

Overall I am so happy with how the room turned out! It just feels fresher and the accents feel much more modern. I loved having a project to work on and slowly collecting things over time. What do you think of the new look?
