You may remember I purchased four of these great old balusters (a fancy word for porch posts) recently. I knew they would be great on their own or to make into lamps. I decided to leave two as-is, and turn two into lamps (one to sell and one to keep, of course).
The bottoms were just slightly angled, so I had Matt's very handy grandpa level the bottoms, then drill a hole in the top.
I purchased a lamp kit at my local hardware store, tried to decipher the directions, gave up on that, watched a few YouTube videos on how to use a lamp kit, and finally put the whole thing together. It really is fairly simple once it's properly explained (I recommend just watching a few videos).
I really do love this look. I've always seen baluster lamps in magazines in homes filled with vintage finds, but have never found quite the right posts to use. These are perfect.
I will have one lamp available at the 12th & White Sale September 6, as well as the other two original balusters if you'd like to make your own (or just decorate with them).
I think this piece will go in my upcoming mint bathroom for some height and texture. I'm loving the chippy white/gray paint and chunky shape.
Having the lamp here for a bit does make me realize I love having a lamp in the kitchen. I think it's time to find the little brother of this baluster and make another one : )
And I couldn't resist a few kitchen pictures while everything was cleaned up. I am selling this vintage tea tin, but I'm pretty sad to see it go. I've
gotten to enjoy it on my counter for the last few months.
Oh, and in other news, you might notice my site looks a little different
than normal {click here to pop over and see it if you're reading in an email or reader}. That's because my amazing designer friend Stephen worked
his magic and did a little face-lift for me. Thank you Stephen! The URL
has now been changed to 12thandwhite.com, but everything should redirect
just fine if you're using an old Honeycomb Creative Co. address. I'm so
glad everything is now under the new 12th and White umbrella...just in
time for September 6!
Have you ever made a lamp out of anything? Did it take a few YouTube videos for you to figure it out too, or are you just much smarter than me??
